What Does 400mm Mean on a Gas Strut?

The 400mm measurement refers to the stroke length, the distance the rod travels between fully compressed and fully extended. It is not the total length of the strut. A 400mm stroke gas strut will have a compressed length of approximately 430 to 480mm and an extended length of approximately 830 to 880mm, depending on the end fitting type and manufacturer.

Force rating (measured in Newtons) is independent of stroke length. Two gas struts with a 400mm stroke can have completely different force ratings, a 300N strut and an 800N strut are both available in 400mm stroke. The correct force rating depends on the weight of the panel and the hinge geometry. Call us if you're not sure what force rating you need, we'll work it out from your application details.

How to Order the Correct 400mm Gas Strut

Step 1, confirm your stroke length is 400mm by measuring your old strut: extended length minus compressed length. Step 2, note the force rating printed on the cylinder body of the old strut (in Newtons, e.g. 300N, 500N, 800N). Step 3, call or WhatsApp us with both measurements and we'll confirm the correct unit from stock.

If the old strut has failed and you can't read the force rating, give us the panel weight and hinge-to-mounting distance and we'll calculate the correct specification. We also stock related sizes, if 400mm is not exactly right for your application, see our full range or call us. We stock gas struts from 150mm to 800mm stroke in common force ratings.

Gas struts are a type of gas spring, sealed nitrogen-filled cylinders used across vehicle panels and industrial applications worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Gas Struts 400mm, In Stock, Same-Day Dispatch.

What is a 400mm gas strut?

A 400mm gas strut has a stroke length of 400mm, meaning the rod extends 400mm from fully compressed to fully extended. The total compressed length will be longer than 400mm (typically 430 to 480mm). Force rating is specified separately in Newtons.

How do I know if I need a 400mm gas strut?

Measure your old strut in its compressed (fully closed) and extended (fully open) position, end fitting to end fitting. The difference is the stroke length. If that's approximately 400mm, you need a 400mm stroke strut. Call us to confirm if you're unsure.

Do you stock 400mm gas struts in South Africa?

Yes. Gas It Lift stocks 400mm stroke gas struts in Gauteng with same-day dispatch for common force ratings. Nationwide courier delivery is available, most deliveries arrive within 2 to 3 business days.

What force rating do I need for a 400mm gas strut?

Force rating depends on the panel weight and hinge geometry, not on stroke length. Common 400mm applications: large canopy lids typically need 400 to 700N; SUV boot lids typically need 250 to 500N; industrial cabinet panels vary widely. Call us with your application details and we'll calculate the correct rating.
